What is surrealism?

Image
Surrealism was a movement in the 1920s that focused on the minds natural ability to skew and warp reality in unlikely ways. the surrealist works often focused on dreams and fantasy worrlds where things weren't necessarily normal. a famous story of Salvador Al Dali is how he got the ideas for his works. when he was running low on ideas he would try to take a nap, but in his hand he would hold a key above a metal dish. this way so when he was just about to fall asleep he would drop the key and the sound would wake him up. Frida Kahlo -- Without Hope, 1945 Salvador Dali -- The Temptation of Saint Anthony, 1946 Although surrealism is often paintings as i show above, it can also be used in photography with the use of tools such as photoshop, we can create similar surreal scenes that might convey similar emotions. David Lachapelle -- Rape of Africa Man Ray -- glass tears,1932

Project #13 - Utopia/Dystopia

Image
For the utopia i wanted to show how even though we often destroy nature, we also embrace it in many ways. We use plants as a symbol of beauty, and love. We often implement nature into art and we use it to decorate structures, show respect, and use it as a gesture of love.  as for the dystopia, i tried to refrain from editing as much as possible. This was due to the meaning behind these. I created this series to show how humanity destroys nature for nothing but its own selfish benefit, so i left the photos natural to show respect for nature and that which we may take for granted. Guess which is which!

Polluted Purity, collaboration with Kai Field

Image
This was the design i used for a screen print. It was my first time doing screen printing, and it provided many new challenges such as the limited colours allowed, as well as making so it didn't get ruined if the design wasn't aligned perfectly.  for the final product i printed on thick paper, which i believe was water color paper (my teacher didn't tell us) and we folded and ripped 12 sheets which we printed on, we did this in order to give the print a more handmade feel as opposed to cutting it which would look more machine made and less like it was actually printed by hand, which it was.  in total I made 12 prints with the help of Kai Field and we both signed them, and numbered them 1-12 with one being the most accurate to the original design, and 12 being the worst print. each step of the printing process was done by hand, we exposed the screens by using a UV lamp and a b/w transparency print of one of the colours (NOT gray scale, as you can not do gradients us...

Project #3 - Final Color Grids and Photos

Image
this picture was monochromatic, because of the use of all browns and similar tones this photo was aimed towards cool coulours, because for the most part, the picture uses dark and desaturated blues this photo was using warm colours, due to the only colours being used were reds and oranges. and the rest is black or white. for this i did a couple of edits in light room but the majority was done in photoshop by reflecting and moving the same photo over and over to eventually create a wallpaper-like effect. (best of warm) this photo was showing colour contrast, since the orange stands out against the blue sky as well as the blue car in the corner. this picture showed cool colours due to the green leaves behind the rope, as well as the rope itself being a slightly blue grey. this one i did the same thing but it was twice as long and i reflected the square grid to create a banner of sorts. (best of warm) for this one i did a long exposure of a game called Evolu...

Framing and Composition Photos

Image
These Photos were taken for a project in my photography class, and were taken with a Canon PowerShot SX200 IS. i took these photos on a walking field trip around downtown Portland close to my school. These photos were originally taken so that they did not need to be edited too too much, so the only edits i did to these were minor cropping and color correction (some more than others). but the reason why i chose these photos was because they best showed the style i go for in photography, as well as their portrayal of the techniques i was trying to use.
